30 Day Blog Challenge — Day 6

Day 06: Your favorite super-hero and why.

Favorite superhero?   This comes at an interesting time because I am doing Christine’s Superhero Workshop with my After-School class.

The approach I’m taking with my afterschool class is this:   They don’t want to be there.  I don’t want to be there.  If I were learning Korean, I would want to watch movies.  However, parents are paying for this class, so we can’t just watch movies.  So we watch a movie one week.  Next week, we do a lesson/activity based on the movie.  Last week, we watched “Bolt,” so this week, we’re talking about superheroes.

And I digress…. I’ve never been a huge fan of superhero movies or comic books.

I just spent 15 minutes going through different superheroes to see who appealed to me… and nothing.

So instead of writing about famous super-heroes, I will write about my heroes:  my parents.

My parents can do just about anything.

My father, Bob, can fix the bathtub, make you a doghouse with his bare hands, and then fix your car.  He can re-wire your house, get money taken off your cell phone bill, and then cook dinner.  He is literally the jack-of-all-trades…. except for when it comes to computers.  I believe he’s mastered email and can sort of surf the web.    Regardless, my dad is the protector of my family and always has advice.  Living alone for the first time, I find myself wanting my father to help me fix my broken toilet seat or tell me why my air conditioner is leaking.

My mother, Lynet, is the sweetest person you’ll ever meet.  She’s a nurse and teacher, 2 of the best professions I can think of.  Not only does she know what medicine to give me, but she also has that magical “mother” touch that makes me feel immediately better. I think my mother helped my mental development in so many ways growing up.  She taught me good study skills, critical thinking, and ways to challenge myself.  I remember being incredibly young…  my mom took a little plastic skeleton Halloween decoration… and soon I had memorized all the bones of the body by their medical terms.  Living alone, I find myself constantly calling her…  for baking advice when I have a new recipe, to discuss symptoms when I start going all hypochondriac, or for teaching suggestions.

Put my parents together, and they can do just about everything.   They have supported me every day for 24.5 years, and I don’t see them stopping anytime soon.  I may not always be the perfect child, but they put up with me and love me every day.  I know I am lucky.  I can’t imagine my life without them.

Momma and Daddy —- I hope you read this!  I love you!!!!!
